POSITION PAPER ON DENGUE VACCINATION

About the paper

Dengue remains a major public health threat in Malaysia. In 2024, although dengue cases saw a slight decrease of 0.58%, dengue-related deaths rose by 17% compared to the same period in 20231, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen prevention efforts.

On February 8, 2024, the Malaysian Drug Control Authority (DCA) granted conditional approval for the TAK-003 dengue vaccine2. This vaccine now complements existing prevention strategies in reducing severe dengue cases and deaths. It has been authorised in 40 countries and is currently available in 27 countries3.

This Dengue Vaccine Position Paper is developed to guide healthcare professionals. It is prepared by a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including infectious disease physicians, paediatricians, microbiologists, health economists, virologists, and public health specialists.

The paper offers evidence-based recommendations on the vaccine’s safety, efficacy, usage, and target populations. It also includes communication strategies to help healthcare professionals address concerns and support vaccine acceptance in clinical practice.
